Q: Buying a 1989 Porsche 944?
There are may names for the '89 944. Can someone explon which name to go by when looking at cars or parts? Sorry about spelling, typing on iPod touch. I am for sure getting an '89 model. I think I will be getting the Turbo as well.

A: ^^^ doesn't get it. There is 944, 944 Turbo, 944S, and 944S2, and those are just the most popular. Which one to buy depends on what you want. 944 is very good value. There is an early 1983-1985 and a late model: 1985.5-1988 (I don't think 'plain' 944s were sold after '88, but I could be wrong). Later is usually desired (1985.5-'88). 1983 is sometimes wanted for it's low weight, but that is usually a racer thing. 1988 has the most power and a taller 5th gear which is usually desired. Those later models have a more desired interior, plus a bit more power, but a bit more weight. If you want more power, 944 Turbo is usually desired, unless you don't want a Turbo. In that case, go with a 944S2. The 944S is generally not desired due to some engine issues. So - generally, 1985.5 and later 944's are desired, plus turbos and S2s. Of the turbo's, there was a Turbo S in 1988 that is nice and all 1989s had the extra power (larger turbo) that the 1988 Ss had, so some say all 1989 turbo's are Ss.

Q: Which to get : porsche 944 turbo S 1989 or 944 S2 1991?
Ok so it's gotten down to these two options. I've asked here about the 968 and the 928 S4, and finally I've narrowed it down to the 944 in its turbo S or the S2 models, because I'm looking for a car that won't cost me as much as a 928 to maintain, and I prefer the looks of the 944 to those of the 968. So the 944 it will be. I will be mostly driving the car in the city with the occasionnal hop on the highway. I know both cars quite reliable if well taken care of, and cost about the same to maintain (chain tensionning vs turbo). So what I'm looking for is advice from those of you who have owned, driven or know about these models. Which one would you get and why? Thanks for you input!

A: I've not owned either, though I have driven a number of examples of each, and am well aquainted with people that track both cars... so: The 951 is a great car. In stock form it is quite quick, and in non-stock form has the potential to be blazingly fast! Aside from the turbo, there are many small upgrades on this car over the base (of the same era) that make it so good. Like all 944s, it has some utility. But while the 951 is a reliable car, the plain fact is that Turbos put more stress on the engine, and as such there will be more problems and more costs. The 944S2 on the other hand benefits from a couple more years of development, and offers alot of performance compared to all other 944s, aside fromt he Turbo. For regular driving in the city, with occassional runs on the highway, the 944S2 is probably going to be the better fit. Both cars can handle city driving, highway, and are very much on home at the race track too. But the 951's nature is such that you will be paying a premium for a car that is better suited to the later two environments when you will seldomly be using it. In the end, you may want to make a decision based more on the specific cars available (ie, a good buy on a mint 951 would trump a so-so 944S2)... though you are probably more likely to find a selection of the S2 than you are a 951S.

Q: Will 19 inch Porsche Rims Fit my 1989 944?
Will 19 inch Porsche Rims Fit my 1989 944? It is not the s2 or Turbo....just the regular 944. I want to put the 19 X 8.0" front & 19 X 9.5" rear (staggered set up). I also have the option of going with a 19 X 11" rear. I do have the option of going with the same wheels at 18 inch with the same width dimensions. Let me know what you guys think.

A: That should work. I have an '88 944 which is essentially the same, as far as tire/wheel fit is concerned. I have 17" wheels on my car, but bc its a racecar, I put wide tires on. Some versions of a 245 tire will fit in the front on an 8" wheel. I have some 10" wheels in the back and use a 275 tire. The 19" and 18" should work out the same for similar widths of wheel and tire. I know many people use 18", but 19" should work, too. I would not go with the 11" wheels. Also, you may need to 'roll your fenders'. I would have someone do it who has done it before. You take a baseball bat and roll it on the inside of the fender while the wheel is off to compress the lip and allow a wider tire. Lastly, the guys at Wheel Enhancement are experts in this area. Q: Porsche 944 spoiler?
I own a 1989 944 porsche and i am wanting to get rid of the stock little rubber like spoiler it has. i have seen a couple of after market spoilers that would fit my make and modle but i am having trouble find them. does anyone know a site that has a huge selection and might have a few for my car?

A: I would check out pelicanparts.com or platz.com. Platz in a mall of 30 or 40 different porsche links. Happy hunting...

Q: Could you put an air cooled porsche 911 engine in a 944?
I am thinking of a newer model 911 circa '02 to '06 engine into a 1989 944?

A: You could do it, certainly. I am helping a buddy put a 351 windsor into a 65 Comet. I did help a fella put a 327 Chevy into a Vega, also put a 1956 Ford Caterpillar Backhoe motor into a 1985 Ranger. If any ask you why, just nod like you are agreeing with them, scratch your head and walk away happy in the fact that you accomplished something.

Q: 1989 ford escort gt, project or trash?
it has 260k miles. just rebuilt the engine and tranny a month ago. very very good condition! flaws interior cracked door panels lights are faded and dull real quick wanting to geta turbo. last on my list but should iput some money into it? the 250$ a month on a new or used car, worth putting into this one? it has the original racing stripes on the side of the door. perfect paint! it worth project? it reminds me of the datsun 280x, or or the porsche 944. something old and has value?

A: It isn't what it's worth to others but what it's worth to you that counts. Hey, if its your baby, of course it is worth it!
