Q: who can tell me about the 1987 Porsche 944?
i found a great deal on one and might buy it. anyone know anything about it good or bad?
A: Well, it has 1/2 a 928 engine for one. It is a wonderful car...1000% better than the abortion called the 924. The 944 does have a problem with the steering wheel, just like the 911...you will get the telltale horizontal Porsche racing stripes on your pants, especially if you wear cords. The fit between your thighs and the steering wheel is very snug, to say the least. There is also a sort of strange steering wheel offset on the 924 and 944, which makes you feel like you are not centered on it, rather reaching a bit to the right for a good grip. You have to have driven one to know what I mean.
Q: I have a 1987 porsche 944 which doesnt want to start.....?
yesterday i was going through an intersection and the car konked out. When you try to start it, it sounds just like its about to start it just wont hit. Some people have told me it could be either the fuel pump or fuel lines. They said there is a valve that i can push in to see if the fuel pump is working. Can someone tell me where this valve and the fuel pump are located and what they the problem might be? Thanks for the help.
A: There is no magic valve for the fuel pump, the pump is at the rear of the car, you will have to slide under the car and have a freind try and start the car if you hear a buzz then the pump is fine If not then either the fuse, pump or relay are bad.
If the pump buzz's and will not start then check if the timing belt is intact, if it's broken then you are looking at big bucks, if belt is ok then there are 2 sensor at the rear of the engine near the fire wall one has gone bad
Q: is a 1987 Porsche 944 fast at all -- Theres no turbo?
is a 1987 Porsche 944 fast at all -- Theres no turbo if so tell me about it i need to know
A: Yes, it has lots of engine and very little weight. It's plenty fast. Get it checked out by a Porsche mechanic if you are thinking of buying one. There are some crappy models out there.
Q: 1987 Porsche 944?
How much would it cost to do a valve job for a 1987 Porsche 944
A: I'm assuming you bent valves because you let the timing belt fail. Not doing that is one key to owning a 944.
Are you doing the work yourself or paying a mechanic?
Valves are about $30 each. Depending on what happened, you bent one or all eight. It's not possible to tell until you pull the head. I'd bet on 4 to 6. Having the head off, there will be a few parts you will want to replace while you're there, such as the head gasket and valve stem seals. That kit runs about $100. You will need new timing and balance belts, another $70 in parts. You may want to do new front seals and rollers, just to take care of it. If it has been about 60,000 miles since the water pump was last changed, add one of those.
As far as time, I'd figure that it's an 8-10 hour job just to pull and replace valves and the head. Budget accordingly for labor.
If this is too expensive, you can typically find someone selling a complete 8 valve 944 head for about $200. You still have to take the old one off and install the new head.
These cars are expensive to maintain, especially if you need to pay someone to fix them. They get exponentially worse when you neglect them, as you are seeing now. Having said that, get your new timing belt retensioned 1500 miles after installing it, 15,000 miles after installing it, and have it replaced at 30,000.
Q: 1987 Porsche 944 won't start?
Bought a 1987 Porsche 944 that has been sitting for a few years, and am trying to get it started. I drained the tank and put in some injector cleaner.
Engine runs on starting fluid in the intake, but dies afterwards. So I'm guessing it's the injectors, but is there anything else it could be that I missed?
Fuel pump has been replaced.
I think the DME relay is ok.
I get fuel at the nut by the fuel rail.
I get spark.
I checked the air flow sensor and it seems to move just fine.
Any ideas?
A: check the fuel pressure, just cause there is fuel present, doesnt mean it has enough pressure to start/run.
fuel pressure regulator possibility
check the fuses ,are they all good?
If ok,need to find out what signals the injectors on,computer problem perhaps,
Q: 1987 Porsche 944 wont star
I have a 1987 Porsche 944, the car wont start, the car does crank but it does not start, my mechanic told me it was not getting any spark, I replaced a crankshaft sensor, and a relay, but still no luck, I am going to replace the computer, and ignition coil, should I replace these two things or any ideas to what could be causing this, any help will be appreciated thanks.
I just tried starting my Porsche and it started, but after driving it for a while I parked and tried turning it on again and it didn't want to start, what could be the problem, the car starts when cold and after its used it wont start, could this be a faulty computer or something else, thanks for the help guys.

Q: 1987 Porsche 944 as first car?
Yay or Nay?
A: Porsches are poor beginner's cars. They have a unique feel to them that is not at all like other cars.....so when you borrow someone else's car, you might be caught off guard at the different handling.
Porsches are expensive to maintain and service. Mechanics hate working on them. Parts are imported and the car is considered quite old by now......parts may not be available for this car, due to its unpopularity.
Other porsche owners hated this particular one. It was cheaply made, not long lasting, and could barely get out of its own way.
So I say No. Try something you can get parts for easily. Used sport cars and luxury cars are always sold to "suckers" who want a status symbol on a budget. Then they bring the car to me, and complain they can't afford to fix it, and automatically think I am fixing the prices on the hard-to-find parts. They go somewhere else, and find out the prices are even higher. It's their own fault for not knowing the differences between wants and needs, I say. You only need 4 tires and a steering wheel.
Q: I have a 1987 Porsche 944 2.5 4 cyl 5 spd needs TLC !! Any Porsche collectors interested in buying it?
Engine seems to run good. just some cosmetics and minor repairs. 2600 obo
A: It's not a collector car....advertise it as a used car on autotrader or craigslist and forget the collector car hype---it's not going to fool a Porsche buyer.
Great handling car, I like 'em, but they are a dime a dozen....your price is fair enough if it's clean.
Q: What is an excellent audio system for my Porsche 944 Turbo?
Hey, I just bought a 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo. Can anyone suggest a sweet audio system along with a one-stop audio shop in B.C., Canada that can install it for me? I'd like the works - perhaps even an LCD screen to play movies. Is it an issue to get a system that is compatible with this car's electrical system and front deck cavity dimensions? I'm new to this game. K.
Thanks for everyone's help - especially ohboyshay.
For that last post... My gf and I are going to be spending 2 weeks in it driving across the country (from where I bought it in Victoria, B.C to where I live in Ottawa, Ontario) - that's why I'd like a nice stereo in such a car...wouldn't you?
A few more things to add: I have tons of tunes on my computer (12K+). What is the best method to upload them at home and then play them in my car?
On a related note, once I get home from my cross-country road trip, is there a car audio system existing today that will enable me to sense my wireless home network upon driving up to the house, and then download all my music (and perhaps video)? I already own a Transporter (see www.slimdevices.com) which does this within my home (i.e. sending computer hard drive music wirelessly to a hi-fi stereo).
Thanks,
K.
A: unfortunetly i live in the us so i dont know of a place but i can answer a few of ur questions. i would go for 2 w6's or w1's 10 inch made my jl audio with a custom ported box and a sub that can handle that power. i would also replace the speakers because if you turn the music up loud your old speakers might not be able to handle the power. as far as having problems, you are bound to run into a few with such an old car. i would look some stuff up on crutchfield.com they always have good deals but if your worried about having someone install it, i really cant help you cuz i dont live there and i dont know what you have for stores. hope i helped a little. o yea, with the lcd screen, you might have some trouble finding one thats compatable. try to look it up online i bet other people with the same car have done that kind of thing to it.
Good Luck!
Q: Turning 16 in August and I bought a 1987 BMW 635CSi (L6) for $2200. Is this a good choice for a first car?
It gets about 24 mpg.
Also, I was wondering if I should sell it for $4300 and buy a 1987 Porsche 944 turbo
A: The L6 is a derivative of the E24 635CSi and with the exception of more leather in the interior, shared the identical powertrain of the 635CSi.
I have owned my '85 E24 (Euro M635CSi) since it was new and out of all the BMWs I have had, 2002, 2002tii, 320i, E28, E39 M5, and currently an E60 M5, the E24 is my favorite.
I have to agree it will probably be more reliable than the 944 turbo, however, unless your parents are going to help financially, the E24 will definitely not be cheap to maintain - hardly any German-made car is. But the driving feel, overall balance, and quality of most German cars will spoil you for anything else. These cars require vigilant maintenance or they will "turn on you". If you're not ready to handle this, youd be better off with something Japanese.
Q: Value of a Porsche 944?
I'm thinking about buying a Porsche 944. It's a 1987, no turbo 2.5L engine, seems like it has a few defects, but the only thing that seems major is the power steering system is shot. I already have quotes on what it will cost to get it into working shape, but I'm looking for an answer from a Porsche enthusiast. I am wondering if this car is going to be cool looking, but is that all I'm going to be able to do with it, because it will be in the shop all of the time? How easy is it to get parts for this car? How easy is it to work on, how expensive is it to have worked on. Any info is helpful. I already looked at Kelly Blue Book, and NADA values for the car, but what is a good deal for the car in your opinion? Thanks.
A: First off, despite what many people seem to say, there are no VW parts used on the 944. The 944 was an evolution of sorts from the 924, which used many Audi parts - most notably the engine. The 944 was introduced a few years on with changed body work, and a new Porsche engine that was literally one half of the V8 used in the 928.
The 944 is an exceptionally well balanced car. It handles well, brakes well, and each version that came out tended to get a little faster. However none of the nomrally asperated versions are exactly "fast." They can make good track cars and move very well, but they must be skillfully driven to preserve the momentum and leverage the car's other strengths.
The car is more modern than a similar year 911, and I think they look good, but how good they look is ultimately a personal opinion and what matters is how good you think it looks.
Car value and pricing on a late '80s 944 can be pretty wide depending on the specific car, it's conditions, and any options or upgrades it may have had. As a baseline, perhaps $2500-3500 could be considered for average. More for low milage, excellent condition... less as issues start to add up. It's worth paying more for a car with the options you want and in good condition than trying to find a lesser example for less money as even though these are now priced quite low, repairs can be expensive.
These cars originally sold for $30k+, and parts costs tend to reflect that. Likewise, a skilled Porsche mechanic can be expensive. The car is relatively easy to work on, though even if you are well skilled, there are still probably some issues you will want to turn over to a professional. Parts are readily available and there are great support systems in the enthusiast community (be it on-line sources like Pelican Parts BBS and Rennlist, or more traditional like local chapters of PCA).
Q: boyfriends porsche leaked oil on new driveway how do we clean it up?

Q: VIN number for 1990 Porsche 944 turbo?
I am about to buy a 1990 Porsche 944 turbo (951). I know that from 1989 and there onafter all turbos were turbo "S", with the larger turbo, larger brakes and M030 option. However, in the VIN of this 951, in the place where the letter designates year of production, it has the letter "H". H is for 1987 production models. The letter L is for 1990 production models. This car comes from Japan, imported in Canada. Is it possible that overseas the VIN does not read out as it does in North America? I doubt it, since VINs are an international convention, but am looking to understand this matter. All the rest of the VIN indicates it is a turbo model, built and assembled in Germany. Only the letter indicating production year is off. It is also to be noted that the car passed a federal inspection when it was imported to Canada, and on this inspection form it is marked that it is a 1990 model.
Thanks for any input on this matter.
A: Read this:
http://www.autohausaz.com/ porsche-auto-parts/ porsche-vehicle- identification-numbers.html (delete spaces before both porsches & identification)
H is definitely 1987, not 1990.
Put the VIN here: http://www.analogx.com/ contents/vinview.htm (delete space before contents)
Q: Importing a used car into Japan?
If a car is imported in Japan, is it true that they reissue a VIN for that car? For example I am interested in a 1987 Porsche 944 turbo. I found that the car has two VIN numbers : a north american one and a "rest of the world" one, both located in their respective places on the car. After a bit of research, I found out that the car was sold to the Canadian market in 1987, so its original VIN is WP0AA2xxxxxx. The car was then imported in Japan in 1990, and I was told that in Japan they issue a VIN for imported cars... And so the other VIN that is tagged on the car is WP0ZZZxxxxx. Is this so, or does this smell fishy? Thanks.
A: Contact the Japanese equivalent of the DMV.
