Q: What brands of synthetic motor oil are good for 2001 Porsche 911?

A: Mobil 1 is still the official choice from Porsche... however in the last couple years, formula changes make it less than ideal. But it is at least still a solid choice (the changes would mean less protection the longer that it is used, so if used, a shorter and lighter duty cycle would be recommended). The two best choices out there at the moment would be either Royal Purple or Redline. One or the other is most likely stocked by most independent Porsche shops (dealers will have Mobil 1). Most other commercial brands will be similar to Mobil 1 and will be ok, though far less than either the Royal Purple or Redline.

Q: What options on my 2001 Porsche 911 with Engine Light and center warning to Take to Shop?
It had occurred before and I simply reattached and tightened air filter housing and reset via detaching battery...

A: i would take it to an auto-zone and get them to scan the fault codes for you. Write the codes down and then look online for what that code means. Rennlist would have the codes id imagine, but if they dont, ask the dealer, they will. if you need further help, i check the porsche questions almost daily.

Q: Porsche 911 2001 brake sound?
Hi, My Porsche 911 2001 makes a scraping sound when braking at low speeds. I am not sure if the problem does not exist at high speed or I cannot hear it because of engine sound. The brake sensor light is not on. Do you think I need to get brakes replaced? How much do you think it might cost at the dealership? Thanks

A: how loud is it? remember, you're basically rubbing two very hard compounds together - they're gunna make some noise. If you have metallic brake pads, this could be the case as well.

Q: how do you open the rear hatch to 2001 porsche 911 when the battery is dead ?

A: hammer and a screwdriver

Q: Which Porsche should I buy tomorrow. A 2001 911 Twin Turbo or a 2005 911 S?

A: Ultimately, with a purchase like this, it should be the car that catches your imagination and that you REALLY like. Both of these are great cars and have their advantages. The 996 Turbo is a fast car that manages to do pretty much everything well. It's comfortable and tame despite being very fast. The main drawbacks will be that the turbo will have a higher cost of ownership. The 997S is also quite fast as well as being comfortable and pliable to what you want to do as a driver. It lacks the brutal power of the turbo, but it has the advantage of a few refinements made in the 4 years that seperate the two examples you mention. Both cars would be usable as daily drivers as needed, and both would also be very capable if you decided to take them for a day of driving at the race track (which is a highly recommended activity for Porsches). I think the suspension upgrades that came after 2001, along with many very small improvements, make the 997 a very compelling package; balanced against the fact that the turbo was the top of the line when it came out. I would probably favor the 997 for this, and because I've found I prefer tracking normally asperated 911s (though I think the 996 Turbo is one of the best street 911s ever produced). Ultimately I think you should drive both, then step back and take a look. I would be willing to bet at that moment it would be clear which is the right car for you. One of them will simply move you more than the other, and that's the one you get.

Q: Porsche 911 Carerra?
I am thinking of buying a 2001 911 carerra.I have always owned corvettes,In your opinion am I going to be happy with the Porsche?

A: Yes you will. Ive got a 2004 Carerra Cabrio and the difference is phenominal. The first thing you will notice is that the gas pedal feels different from the corvette. This is because of the rear mounted engine, so the cables run from back to front and attach to the bottom of the gas pedal. Whereas the vette is front engine and the cables attach to the top (as with just about 99% of all other vehicles). The feeling on the pedal takes a little to get use to, but nothing major. 2nd. The ride is sooooo much more quiet than the vette. I dont know about your vette but mine rode like a phacking tank. I could feel every bump and crack in the road. Not so in the 911. 3rd. The first gear is soo fast its crazy. 4th. Its all based on what you like to drive so go with what you like, but you wont be dissapointed by the 911 at all. Just my opinion.

Q: I just got a '08 Porsche 911, but I'm thinking of trading in for a BMW 650/M6?
Since golf clubs don't fit into the 911, I'm thinking of trading in for a BMW 650/M6. I've been a long time Porsche 911 owners since 2001, and a black Corvette. Once in a while during 2 hours+ drives, I get tired of the cramped 2 seater that has tiny trunk space, and yet ended up getting another 911 this year. I test drove the BMW 6 series and M6 prior to the Porsche purchase, and loved the ride and spacious interior and trunk space. But it's still a common BMW. People tell me that BMW 650 or M6 is no match with the brand name Porsche 911. 5 years ago, I ended up getting the Vette and 911 at the same time when I got tired of driving a 4 door Mercedes E class sedan for about 10 years. '08 Porsche 911 or BMW 650 or M6? It's a tough one.

A: Of the two I would take the M6. I'm not sure which 911 you have but the only one that is faster is the turbo's and GT2 or GT3. The others are all slower or tie the M6 although the slowest is still 5 secs. The cheapest is the GT3 that is $107500 USD. The M6 runs to 60mph in 4.5 sec and starts at $100000 USD. The 911 starts at $73000 USD. Of the 911's that are slower the most expensive is $97000 USD. So price wise again it depends of which 911 you have. The M6 is more luxurious and roomier. It also handles better b/c BMW's are all nearly 50/50 weight distribution while the 911 is 38.2/61.8. All these prices are based on new vehicles for newest model year out. Also I'd really consider the M5 which has the same powerplant as the M6 but is a 5 series sedan and lots more room. Even and M3 would be good but not as roomy. But still as quick being only .3 sec slower.

'08 Porsche 911 Carrera or '08 BMW 650 / M6?

A: go for the Beamer if you need the space. the Porsche is definitely a bi**c getter though. if were in your position I'd wouldn't get either. I'd get a 67 camaro with a 454 4 on the floor, with 350 posi rear end. in forest green with ghost stripes. but that's me. but if you a "professional" you probably shouldn't get a muscle car it might ruin your "image". sorry im just rambling now. I admire you because you have nice cars. I'll trade you my 91' Brougham Caddi for your Vette, then you'd have PLENTY of trunk space!!

Q: 1974 Porsche 911 Targa?
115k miles The following two paragraphs are from an ad: "The car is in working condition and also passed inspection about two weeks ago. The outside is free of dents and only has about two little dings. There are a few rust spots (pictures will be provided upon request), but nothing out of the ordinary considering its age. The inside requires some TLC. A previous owner attempted to restore the interior, but it was never completed. We purchased it with the hopes of restoring it, but a recent move to another state and new business owners...we can't take on the project. I replaced the oil pump and all the valve seals last summer. The previous owner rebuilt the engine in 2001. The car is in working condition, however, keep in mind it is an antique." Here are pictures from the ad: http://aycu06.webshots.com/image/18725/2003999177951236498_rs.jpg Now, I have two questions: 1. How much would you pay for this car? 2. From what you can see, how much would a simple restore cost? And by a simple restore, I mean getting rid of most rust, making the interior more presentable (not necessarily perfect, just no rips/stains), making sure there are no leaks or mechanical problems, and just cleaning it.

A: Well I would start by saying about 1500.00 But assuming that the rust is probably pretty bad, I would say closer to 2500.00 or more, for a complete revamp of the car, getting it ready for the road. Depending on your color, fading and how the new/old paint is. You could spend more than 8,000.00, depends on the condition.

Q: Wich car do you like??

A: Mercedes would last longer by far, and the Porsche would be a lot more fun on back roads, I would go for the Mercedes-Benz, they're fun, practical, and fast, due to there massive engines.
