Q: Where is the oil filter located in a 1990 Porsche 911 carrera2?
I need to know where the oil filter is on my porsche. Is this easy to chage the oil myself of should I take it in somewhere?
A: The 964, and all air cooled 911's will have the oil filter attached to the side of the oil tank, which is inside the right rear fender (except on the 1972 911, which is further forward), and it is easily accessible from the engine bay.
It is easy to change - the most common error will be the amount of oil needed (13 quarts). Common mistake number one is using an oil drain pan that cannot hold that much oil, typically resulting in an overrun over oil across your driveway! The second common mistake is forgetting this is a dry sump system, and over filling as a result (only to have vast amounts of smoke pour out as the oil overflows after a little driving).
You need to jack up the back end of the car, and then drain the oil from the sump... once this is empty, put the plug back in and move to the oil tank, and drain it. Once it too is empty, put the plug back in and then you're ready to take the filter off (which will typically have a fair amount of oil in it, so it's a good idea to keep the drain pain under the oil tank). Put the new filter on (which can take a little while to get lined up right in my experience on many of these cars).
When you refill, aim to put in about 10-11 quarts. Start the engine and let it run a little, and then check the level, adding another half to one quart until you are getting a full reading. If still not full, let it run for awhile more, and top off until you are reading full.
Easy as that!
Edit: It actually is on the oil tank, though depending on the specific model, the mounting assembly can be on the wall of the engine compartment (the oil tank is right on the other side of that wall, and the filter is connected to it).
Q: How much does a new a/c cost on a 1990 Porsche 911?
My compressor ceased up 2 weeks ago. I cut the belt, and I am able to drive the car with no problem. Summer is fast approaching, and I have been given a quote of $1500 for a new a/c system (around $1000 if it is just the compressor). Any Porsche mechanics out there?
A: I went to autohausaz.com. I used them to rebuild 3 german cars (2 BMW's and a wrecked New beetle).
For your compressor: $350
Expansion valve: 30
accululator: 30
Condensor: 300
Evaporator: 400
Price comes to: $1110 for all that.
Those are all brand name parts also.
Q: How much would it be to maintain a 1990 Porsche 911(964)?Read on.?
How much would it cost a year to maintain a
1990 Porsche 911 Coupe(964) with
2 Wheel Drive,
Auto-Trans.,&
100k miles on it with 7k miles being put on it every year?
Also what I mean by maintain is EVERTHING!!!
Oil, Brakes, Tune-Ups, Servicing (Major and Minor), Fluids Flushing and Exchanging, Trans., Engine, ETC..........
Also just how much is a rebuild on a Porsche 964 Engine and Trans.
THANK YOU!!!
A: Alot will depend on how hard the 7k per year are (I've put less than 7k on my 3.2L 911 many years, but in those cases all most all of them have been at the track which has a dramatic impact on my maintainance schedule). The other factor will be your mechanic, and his shop rate. In general, I've found dealerships are no longer familar with the air cooled cars and you are much better off seeking a third party that knows the older cars.
A basic service will include your oil (13 quarts) and filter, and probably about 30 minutes of a tech's time to do that and take a quick look around to make sure everything is in order. That's going to be about $40-50 in the parts, and an equal amount for the labor. More in parts if you are using synthetic oil... for a findal total that will bring you somewhere aorund $100-150. This is a good basic guideline for pretty much most basic maintance items (brake flush will have the cost of a dot 4 fluid, and the 30+ minutes of the tech's time, etc).
The more major services will not require some more parts, but will require much more time in labor (on the plus side, the 964 does not need the valves adjusted). Figure $300-500 for this.
You're also dealing with a 15+ year old car and chances are you will have an occassional issue with something like the alternator or air flow meter. In my experience, whatever it is that needs that occassional attention, the part will be about $500 and the labor another $100-200. Fortunately I can also say that Porsches have been the most reliable cars I've owned and this is not that common (and it is an easy car to do alot of your own work on).
As to getting into an engine and transmission rebuild... the 3.6L rebuild would probably run in the $6k range... more if you're making any upgrades at the same time. Transmission would probably be in the $3-4k range, though I'm mostly guessing as I've never dealt with a rebuild on a G50 myself.
Overall, for normal day to day driving, at 7k a year, you are probably looking at a couple basic services per year, a more major service and flushes every other year, and some basic replacement every 4 years. This would average out to around $600-700 a year.
Q: Porsche Boxster or 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4?
I already have a 1990 Carrera 4 which I enjoy but fancy the idea of something newer. I can't help feeling though that the Boxster is a bit of a 'girly' car... should I stick with my 911 or change?
I'd prefer it to be a Porsche. They're simply the best in my opinion. 993.... possibly.....
A: 911 all the way - but the Boxster is a sweet ride!

Q: How realible, insurance friendly, and safe is a 1990-1994 Porsche 911 964 Coupe for a 16 year old.?
realible as what a volvo, bmw.........etc.............Also lets say 120k miles on it
insurance for 16 year old in LA
safe as thought is a car or suv comes out of know where and hit you at the side at 45 mph will you walk out(if possible please tell me sites that have either, crashtest, crash test pics, crashed pictures)
Please do not critizise this porsche it was the first porsche i ever saw in my life i never knew what the hell a porsche was before that. I fell in love with it. It was a Rusnak Dealership Bought Black exterior and interior Porsche 964 with a young man and women like in there late 20s or very early 30s. it was at a gas stattion/car wash. it was so beautiful espesialy for that year.
A: Porsche's are reliable, They are not insurance friendly at all and they are just barely safer than playing Russian roulette. To put a 16 year old kid behind the wheel of a car like that is almost like killing the kid yourself, or at least it should be. If you want your child to have a nice vehicle for their first go but him or her an H3. Or something like that with a full frame and does not inspire fast driving. Hope I have been helpful.
Q: Are 1990-1994 Porsche 911(964) very realible and dependable car?
Are 1990-1994 Porsche 911(964) very realible and dependable car?
What I mean is are they realible and dependable to cars of similar class like BMW, Volvo, Audi, Benz, etc...
Please answer on a scale of 1-10 (1 being the worst) and (10 being the best)
THANK YOU!!!
A: Prohbably some range here depending on the specific model. I'll say an overall "9" as a direct answer. If you go with a Carrera 4 of this era you may find some other problems. Targas and Cabriolets that are in the 10+ year old catagory may have some leaks that need addressing. Pretty much any version of the 911 is likely to have some issues, and the 964s were no exception: fly wheel and head gaskets being the two that spring to mind, though most cars out there now have probably long since had the fixes for these implemented.
The 964s I've been around are been very reliable. Porsches in generally are very reliable cars, but that always comes with the added note that "they were all expensive cars to start with , and parts and repairs will be priced accordingly."
Q: When did the Tiptronic gear box for Porsche came out? If a 1990 911 has a tip gear box is it retrofitted?
A: In 1989, Porsche introduced the ahead-of-its-time Tiptronic automatic transmission in the 964 Carrera 2, featuring adaptive electronic management and full manual control.

Q: my porche 911 1990 stalls while driving, once the temp gets to normal, it runs fine?
1990 porsche carrera 4. just got the oil changed.
A: I have a similar car (1990 C4). Mine stals all the time, more in the cold weather, but even when warmed up (although not as often).
My car has a lightweight flywheel and this is the main reason. Do you know if you have a stock flywheel?
You can try getting your plugs changed and the distributor caps.
Check the 964 forum at rennlist.com for more info. This is a great resource!
Q: Now since that event of someone trying to steal my porsche 911 i have desided to sell it(its only been a week)
So since its a 2000 porsche and has parts people want i have decided to sell it and i had just bought it "how good things leave so fast", but i still have not given up on the porsche plan, since the 00 porsche inscurance was high, i need octane 91 gas, and an atemptend theft i am selling it for a less valued Porsche 911.
-------
The 1990-1994 Porsche 911(964)
Its seem like thefts don't want it as much, and i can use less high octane gas ,and insurance should be less and i don't have to worry about it now to much.
I want a grey exterior, any interior, auto if i can get it.
My question about a 964 porsche, theft ratings, MPG, average estimate cost to maintain one a year(drive 50miles all day and 40 on weekends), and safety, & quality of parts. My 00 porsche is great but its to much of a hasltle. i will be searching for a 964 starting tomorrow. NO 4 or S or Turbo JUST the basic to keep cost, insuracne, theft, and gas consumption down. Also the size of the trunk.
A: about gas & Porsche
My mechanic let me know when I had a Mercedes that was over 5 years old - that I could switch down to 89 octane.
My Porsche is a 2001 - and he told me the same. I have switched - and guess what - I get better mileage now...
Pssst - I got rid of the Jag - and it did better with lower octane, I've picked up a used BMW and it loves 89 octane...
According to my trusted mechanic - after 5 years, with the computerized sensors - the car will adjust and be fine... they just don't want you doing it younger and under warantee... or so I've been told.
Enjoy the cheaper gas - I bought some at 2.49-9 this weekend!!!! Wahooo...

A: I think they're all great!! I have a 1990 911 and it's dark blue. ALl these colors are great, but I'd probably rank them black, white, red (black is just awesome - but you need to keep it clean - if you love your car, that should not be a problem. white is great - not too common, unlike the red). I'm a firm believer that the best interior color would be black, and it should be manual, vs tip - so of the 3 cars, I'd take the red one.
BTW - if I was to choose any color, it would be either fly yellow or speed yellow!
Q: My next daily driver.. 944 Cabriolet maybe? Opinions?
So I've had a bad habit of buying a Japanese sports car the past few years. I've owned a Integra, RSX TypeS and now a G35 in the past 5 years. I'm quite simply tired of having a car payment and cost of ownership on the G35 has been quite higher than the others as well.
The things I really want in my next car are: Handling, RWD, Acceleration, coupe that seats 4 when required, convertible, decent gas millage and reasonable cost of ownership and around $10k
There seems to be very few cars out there that meet even most of those requirements, but eventually I came to the conclusion of considering an older Porsche... I drove a '79 924 and '84 911 before I had a license and I fell in love. I think its due time I owned one but I don't know enough about them to make a decision yet.
Based one what little I've read, I'm thinking maybe a 1990 944 Cabriolet but wanted to get some opinions from people that know these cars.
Thanks
Just an update due to first response. I'm very mechanical inclined and have some exposure to German ways under the hood. Once I decide what I want, I intend to find something that's clearly been well maintained and low millage in regards to its age. I also bike, walk and use transit quite often, so my daily driver can breakdown without being a big deal and I'm not very open to settling on something that doesn't meet all requirements and considering Porsche because I know they're well engineered, which is something I appreciate. Regarding the back seat, it would mostly be used to cram my little sister's friends in, they don't have to be comfortable. Had 5 of us in the G35 once for a short drive, was certainly uncomfortable but they didn't mind.
A: Uh... you are aware that the last 944 stormed out of Stuttgart when the current president's father was in the White House, aren't you? Where I come from, they have a nickname for people who rely on 20-year-old sports cars as daily drivers: Pedestrian.
Not that the Porsche is inherently unreliable. But a 20-year-old car is likely to have had multiple owners with varying standards of what constitutes proper maintenance This is a discovery you don't want to make on the day you are dressed to meet a new client.,
If you can bring yourself to abandon just one of your criteria, you;ll find many foreign and domestic that will either be more economical, cheaper to repair, easier on gas, less to insure or all of the above.
